I have officially started looking for cars now in the $7k CAD range (except if it’s an E39 M5).

I would like to know what I need to look out for - common issues with the cars, major wear items, etc.

Also, any chance a fellow Oppo can help me get a CarProof?

In order of preference, I’m looking at these cars.

1. E39 540is and M5s

This one guy is selling his M5 for $15k CAD. I texted him when his ad was up. Now it’s gone. But the guy responded to my text yesterday and said it’s still available. This bad photo is all I could get of what used to be his ad.

There are only like5 E39 M5s for sale in all of Canada right now and none of them are listed for less than $20k CAD. So I’m going to need pointers to check this out (and to check 540is too)

2. Second gen G37s (preferably manual) and IS250/350s.

3. Lexus IS 300.

Maybe I’ll just get something I’ve already driven that’s a bit cheaper (~ $5k) and splurge once I get a better job...

If you need a Bimmer mechanic to do a PPI, I recommend Bimmex over at Woodbine/South of Hwy 7.

240,000 km on an m5

i think the only pointer you need there is to get a bimmer tech to look it over

thats definitely well in to about to break expensively territory (at least potentially)

If you’re watching a budget don’t get an old M car.

Its a solid option, but a little too plain for my taste.

I’ll see if I can get something more comfortable at least, if not sporty.

Thanks! Do you know any in the Missisauga area? That’s where this car is located.

You’re right. I’m trying to arrange a meet up to see the car in person first.

If everything looks ok, I’ll get a BMW tech do a once over for sure.

Then don’t go BMW.

Look for an older Lexus or Acura.

TSX is real nice. Not a true luxury car but still handles really well and way more reliable than most cars out there.

That’s the only one I know... but if the seller is serious, they will let you do it. Maybe give them $50 for their time to go with you. Bimmex also has a Woodbridge location which is right next to Brampton and north of Mississauga.

https://www.bimmex.ca/contact-us/

The dealership I bought my F30 from was in Brampton, they still let me do that as well, just that the sales guy went with me on a weekday.

And another thing... in Canada you probably want the Car Proof rather than the Car Fax.

Cheap to operate and fix, check.

Sporty, it’s not the V8 but it’ll drive better than a Camry, so check.

Comfortable, check.

Rare, check... (I guarantee you won’t find another around here, I’ll bet you it’s even rarer than an E39 M5.)

VMR says this should be in the $7-9k range, so it’s up to your negotiation skills.

Dude, this is awesome!

But no V8 :(

I found a manual V8 G8, but its $20k

Yeah that’s the GXP which is even rarer, the base V6 and GT never came with the manual. No way you can find anything under that, they’re unicorns like the Solstice Coupe.

Something else might be of interest:

https://www.tcbmw.com/used/vehicle/2012-buick-regal-turbo-id8788386.htm

Advantage of this: it’s a manual Buick. Insurance on Buicks are generally cheaper, and on top of that since this is a GS, there aren’t many on the road for statistics, so insurance companies would give a lower premium rate (so I was told, but seems to add up considering my Solstice’s premium is like 900 bucks, lol.)
